Aptly described as the land between the earth and sky, writers, anthropologists and adventure lovers often refer to Ladakh as the Moon Land or the Broken Moon Land. Situated at an altitude between 2,750 m and 7,672 m, Ladakh is located in the Trans-Himalayan region of India bordering Pakistan and China and physically not far from Afghanistan and Russia. Ladakh at present is accessible by road from Manali and Srinagar and by direct flights from Delhi, Srinagar, and Jammu.
Leh is the capital of Ladakh and the centre point all tours. The palace on the hilltop dominates Leh. Once it was the trading center for salt, spice, silk, carpets, dyestuffs and narcotics from Yarkand, Kashgar, China and other parts of Central Asia connecting the famous silk route.
Ladakh is also known as the land of the Lamas (Little Tibet). People practice Tibetan Buddhism. The beautiful monasteries on the hilltops are akin to those in of Tibet. The Thiksey monastery resembles the Potola of Tibet in its grandeur. On the heritage front, Ladakh outshines any area as far as ancient monasteries are concerned; Ladakh has 34 ancient monasteries some of which date back to thousands of years. The monasteries of Ladakh are rich with antique statues, Thangka paintings, ancient Buddhist scriptures, wall paintings, coins, armour, weapons, precious jades and porcelain. The resonant chants of the Lamas, the mysterious tantric rites and the mask dance of the Lamas will transport you to the world of spirits and spiritualism. A journey to Ladakh is a unique and unforgettable experience !!!!!
